Tanika Byrd, EdD

Dr. Tanika Byrd is committed to impacting her local and global community in regards to equity, inclusion, social justice, and intercultural communication. As a Communication professor, she has specialized experience in creating meaningful experiential learning sessions for adults. Building brave spaces that agitate and educate is the key to how she encourages participants to strive for creating personal and professional change. Personally, much of her commitment to inclusion and diversity work is fueled by her two beautiful boys and supportive partner. As a life-long learner and scholar, Dr. Byrd regularly presents and attends conferences that focus on communication, race, gender, and social justice.  Working across identities to create an equitable and inclusive environment is her life’s passion.

Jennifer Laflam, MA

Jennifer Laflam believes change is rooted in the power of being in community with others who seek to deepen their humanity by facing power and privilege. The love and compassion she brings to her work grow in part from the love and hope she has for her own two children. As a former high school teacher and a community college English professor specializing in adult learning and reading, she meets learners where they are and shapes learning experiences to be relevant to people’s lives. She focused much of her own educational journey on becoming an expert in her field until she learned the importance of understanding her own racial identity and the impact of her privilege. She continues to be dedicated to both her professional and personal growth, which fuels her ability to support others as they seek to know themselves in pursuit of real change.

Pamela Chao

Pamela Chao has been teaching Sociology at American River College for over 20 years and loves working with all populations on equity and inclusion topics.  I am the first person born in the United States in my immigrant family--my parents are originally from China.  I have two children who are amazing human beings and who will start grad school and college in the fall.  My partner is trained as an entomologist and we have lively social science v. life and physical science discussions at home around diversity and equity.
